Barnstone's Macmillan Cancer Event Raises £600

Members of the local community and employees of Tarmac’s Barnstone Cement Works in Barnstone put their baking skills to good use recently and raised a massive £600 for Macmillan Cancer at a special Coffee and Cake afternoon.

A great selection of treats, including muffins, tea breads, pavlova, cupcakes, tray bakes, gin and tonic muffins, carrot cakes and pecan tarts, were served up at the event, which was attended by around 100 people from the local area and held at.Barnstone Village Hall in Barnstone, Nottinghamshire.

Josie Morrissey, environmental co-ordinator at Tarmac’s Barnstone Cement works, said: “The cake sale was a huge success and it was fantastic to see everyone working so well together.  We would like to thank the local community who supported us in raising so much for this fantastic cause.”

As well as through selling cakes, money was raised by a fundraising raffle and a specialist offered relaxing hand and face massages.

Justina Harper, one of the organisers from the community, said: “We're really happy with how successful the event was.  I would like to send my sincere thanks to everyone who baked, contributed and attended our Macmillan Coffee and Cake Afternoon - it was very much appreciated. It was so lovely to see everyone enjoying a chat over a cuppa and a slice of something delicious, while raising money for such a good cause.

She adds: “The community spirit was absolutely overwhelming. Everyone was so kind and giving with their time and generosity. To raise the sum of £600 was a huge surprise and really shows what a warm hearted and generous community we live in.”

This is the second time that Barnstone Cement Works has been involved with a Macmillan Coffee event after hosting a coffee morning at its premises on Works Lane last September.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer.  Companies and individuals host their own coffee mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone, the charity raised £25 million and since the coffee mornings began in 1990, Macmillan has raised £137m in this way.
