Outstanding members of the local community recognised
Two local people have been recognised and rewarded for their outstanding contributions to the community at an official presentation ceremony held by Newark and Sherwood Homes at The Salvation Army Church Centre in Newark, recently.
Mrs Kate Carter and Mrs Maureen Wilcockson were both presented with an Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award (OCCA) in the form of a glass plaque in recognition of their efforts and a cheque for £100 to donate to a charity of their choice by Newark and Sherwood Homes’ Chair of the Board, Lynn Clayton. Mrs Carter and Mrs Wilcockson were selected from dozens of other worthy tenants, after they were nominated by local tenants.
Mrs Carter was recognised for her outstanding efforts in offering help, support and guidance to tenants who need it.
Mrs Carter has been an active member of the Newark and Sherwood Federation of Tenants and Residents Association for a number of years, and has supported the Safer Neighbourhood Group, as well as many other local improvements.
Mrs Carter chose to give her donation to the Newark Patriotic Fund. Kate Carter said: “It is very humbling to know that people have put me forward for this award, it really makes you feel that you are appreciated. I’m delighted to be able to hand over my donation to the Newark Patriotic Fund, I have met many of the people who have served for our country and who benefit from this great charity. It is a very worthy cause.”
Mrs Wilcockson was chosen because of her long commitment (over 10 years)
as Chair of Winthorpe Road Tenants and Residents Association, during this time she has played an active part in bringing the community together. This includes organising regular bus trips and bingo sessions, plus many other activities. Having lived in the community for 25 years, she has supported a number of improvements including the Decent Homes programme, the building of a kick wall and the renewal of the play area on Fleming Drive in Newark.
Mrs Wilcockson chose the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal as her nominated charity. Maureen Wilcockson said: “I am really pleased to win this award, I do my best to help everyone. My Grandfather was in the First World War, and I’m very happy to be able to give this donation to the Royal Legion Poppy Appeal, it’s a charity close to my heart.”
Lynn Clayton, Chair of the Board of Newark and Sherwood Homes, said: “It’s a great privilege and pleasure to be able to present these awards to such deserving people. Newark and Sherwood Homes relies on the tireless contribution of people like Kate and Maureen, they are well deserved winners.”
Newark and Sherwood Homes is the Management Organisation that was set up by Newark and Sherwood District Council in 2004 to manage, maintain and improve council housing. The organisation manages approximately 5,500 homes on behalf of the Council and its aim is to deliver excellent housing services.
