School names Barnstone community footpath

The community footpath that runs from Works Lane to the playing field in Barnstone has an exciting new name, after pupils at Langar C of E  Primary School took part in a competition organised by Lafarge Tarmac’s Barnstone Cement Works.

‘Wiggly Waggly Way’ was the genius idea of Kate of Class 4, who was the winner of the competition to name the footpath.

Josie Morrissey and Niki Heath from Barnstone Cement Works attended the school to present Kate with a prize of a WH Smith gift voucher for the class to use and a Barnstone 150 year coin produced by the company.  The rest of the pupils were given goody bags as a thank you for taking part by Lafarge Tarmac’s Barnstone Cement Works.

Miss Perry, Class Teacher and Mrs George who runs the Eco Club at Langar C of E  Primary School, said: “The children really enjoyed taking part in this competition.  Lots of them use the footpath in the holidays and on weekends and it will be great to see the sign when it’s in place!”

Mrs George said: “The footpath looks great now with the new markings on there and I am sure the children and their families will enjoy using ‘Wiggly Waggly Way’ for many years to come!”

Josie Morrissey, Environment & Health and Safety co-ordinator at Lafarge Tarmac Barnstone Cement Works said: “We were really pleased to have the support of the local primary school children in naming the footpath.  They are the people who will be using it most of all and we hope that the new name will help to raise awareness of the path and encourage even more people to use it.

“The children came up with some really creative ideas and we would like to thank them for their efforts! The next stage is for us to get the sign produced for the footpath with the winning name, which will be revealed next year.”

The works has recently upgraded the footpath after working with the local 1st Barnstone Brownie pack to make the footpath more fun and interactive.   This was part of a design project that started in Barnstone Cement Works’ Safety Week in which the Brownies worked with the company over the summer.

The Brownies came up with some exciting designs for games and motifs, such as hopscotch, colourful butterflies, letters and numbers games, an alphabet snake, sunflowers and circles to create a fun and interactive play area.

Josie Morrissey continues: “It was fantastic to work with the local brownie pack to find out their ideas about how we could make the footpath even more fun and interactive for local people.  We think they have done a brilliant job and we have had lots of people commenting on how much they love the new look!”

Dot Clayton, pack leader from 1st Barnstone Brownies, said: “It was really exciting for our brownies to see their designs brought to life on the footpath.   It’s great that the footpath now has an exciting new name too!”

Lafarge Tarmac’s Barnstone Cement Works has further plans for the footpath, to improve the entrance to make it more inviting to walkers and to grass over the bank to improve its appearance and the local environment.
