Sheffield's 3Squared wins Queen's Award for Innovation

Sheffield-based software company 3Squared has won a Queen's Award for Innovation for the software it has developed for the rail industry.

The company achieved this outstanding business accolade due to the major efficiencies that its RailSmart suite of Apps has brought for train operating companies.

Rail companies using the Apps have reported significant cost savings and improved operational efficiency, and for 3Squared, this has contributed directly to accelerated growth over the last three years in new product sales, increased turnover and profitability.

This has enabled the business to enter an exciting period of rapid growth and development, during which it has made a number of new appointments. This includes a new management team, with five new managers appointed to head up areas including operations, IT & support, technical, project management and human resources.

James Fox, Commercial Director at 3Squared, said: “These are the awards that every company wants to secure. We are absolutely thrilled to win the Queen’s award for Innovation, which is testament to the creativity and expertise of our team in designing and developing software that has had a tremendous impact in the rail sector. This is an exciting time for our business as we accelerate our future growth plans.”

James continues: “Our business has grown significantly as a direct result of RailSmart and we have increased our staff levels by 40 per cent in the past 12 months to meet demand. This has also enabled us to re-structure the business by appointing a new management team to give us the platform we need to be able to service even larger, national contracts in the future.”

3Squared collaborated with two major rail operators to develop its flagship application, RailSmart EDS, gaining an insight into the limitations of their current systems and tailoring the software exactly to the needs of the business and its employees. Since its launch, RailSmart EDS has proved very attractive to rail businesses, as it makes it much easier for operators to ensure that all drivers and staff are trained to the required standards, avoiding all of the complex administration burden of paper-based systems.

The application enables operators to better manage employee competencies, training requirements and helps them to lower business risk and reduce incidents.

Achieving the prestigious Queen’s Awards for Innovation follows on from 3Squared winning a Rising Stars Award at the Northern Tech Awards in 2015.

James Fox adds: “Sheffield is a fantastic place for a technology business like ours to be based and we are excited about being able to create new employment opportunities as we develop our business even further in our core market sectors. We will continue to work closely with our local universities, to ensure we can attract new talent for the future.”
