Eminox highlights NO2 solution as Supreme Court orders immediate action on air pollution

29 April 2015: The Supreme Court today ordered the UK government to produce new air quality plans by the end of 2015, for zones exceeding NO2 limits on air quality.

As both central government and local authorities search for solutions to achieve these plans, Eminox Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of emissions reduction technology, informs the public that technology is available that can reduce NO2 by more than 95%.

The Gainsborough-based company’s SCRT technology has been proven to reduce NO2 emissions by 96.7%, along with NOx (95%), PM (98.8%), HC (98.1%) and CO (96.5%). The technology has already been retrofitted to more than 2,400 buses in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

The case against the UK Government was brought by ClientEarth and centred on a failure to comply with the EU Ambient Air Quality Directive. Central to the case were 16 cities and regions where government plans show that they will suffer from illegal levels of air pollution long after the limits came into force in 2010. Some of the UK’s largest built up areas including London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and Glasgow are affected.

Air pollution is estimated to cause 29,000 premature deaths in the UK each year, making poor air quality one of the most serious public health risks facing us today.

Dr Martin Ott, Head of Retrofit Business Development at Eminox, said: “The ruling by the Supreme Court demands immediate action to reduce air pollution. Our message to government and local authorities is simple – we have a proven solution that can be retrofitted and which is effective in tackling this very serious health issue.”

Eminox SCRT achieves emissions reductions equivalent to Euro VI, when retrofitted to buses as old as Euro III.  In addition to this, it specifically targets NO2 emissions and is designed for urban operating conditions. Tests have been carried out in real world operation as well as on urban test cycles.

Independent tests carried out by Kings College on Putney High Street showed that retrofitting Eminox SCRT systems to almost 100 buses, achieved a sustained decrease in roadside NO2 of 16% and reduced exceedences of NO2 limits.

Dr Ott added: “Because we design and test in urban operation we know our SCRT technology delivers in cities where pollution is worst. Combined with the ability to specifically target NO2, we know of no other solution, even new buses, which is so well suited to solving this problem.”

“Our message is simple – the solution is there, it’s available and it’s significantly lower cost than buying new vehicles.”
